about

Our version of Richard Rodmey Bennett's arrangement of a tradiitonal tune from the 1963 film version of Far From The Madding Crowd. The spoken word introduction is the voice of singer Vashti Vincent as recorded on location by Peter Kennedy in 1954 at Sixpenny Handley in Dorset. Before she sings a ballad telling of the murder of Fanny Adams in Alton in 1867 Vashti tells of how her father, a shepherd, bought the song from a ballad seller at Wilton Sheep Fair. Special mention should be made to the contribution of our pianist and arranger Fred Thomas for his work on this piece.
